I am kinda new to the pellet grill scene, having inherited my father’s DC when he moved. I rehabbed it and was getting to know it, hoping it would offer me conveniences over my other grills/smokers … but was becoming frustrated that getting it to temps over 300 was difficult, if not impossible. Followed instructions, joined groups, read discussions, bought blankets, put seals on lid, changed pellets … no significant progress.
Don Godke’s Downdraft changed all that. IMMEDIATELY.
Seriously, I didn’t even know the GMG Prime App notified you when the grill reached the set temp — because it had never happened to me before. After the recommended pre-cook procedure, I set the temp for 350 and within minutes, it was locked in! (hottest it had achieved for me to that point.) Game changer. I played with it and took it higher … nailed it. I’m impressed.
As someone who has (and enjoys) 2 Big Green Eggs, the downdraft (and its butterfly vent) just makes sense to me. Controlling the air flow to regulate temperature should have been built into this grill from the start …
This purchase turned my little pellet grill from a curiosity into something I will be using by choice. It is no longer just a compromise for convenience. Don’s Downdraft literally changed my opinion of my Green Mountain Grill from “it’s just a toy,” to now seeing it as a legitimate tool in my backyard barbecue arsenal!
